After China recently began its largest-ever military exercises in the area after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, Germany is now sending its military to Asia to observe and counter China.
Germany intends to increase its military presence in the Asia Pacific as it keeps an eye on Chinese forces in the region, the head of the armed forces told Reuters on Wednesday.
According to Gen. Eberhard Zorn, the Bundeswehr, the German military, intends to increase its presence in the area by dispatching more warships and taking part in more military drills. “This is how we want to consolidate our presence in the region,” he said.
Zorn specifically stated that Germany intends to send a fleet of ships to the area in 2024 and will send troops to engage in training in Australia the following year. For the first time in nearly 20 years, Germany sailed a warship through the South China Sea last year.
The plans from Germany are the most recent illustration of how European allies of the US participate in provocations against China in the Asia Pacific. In recent years, France and the United Kingdom have also sent warships to the area, and NATO is planning to increase its presence there.
Zorn responded, “We do not want to provoke anyone with our presence but rather send a strong sign of solidarity with our allies,” when asked if Germany intended to send a warship through the Taiwan Strait. He claimed that the “enormous buildup” of Chinese military in the area is being observed by Germany.
